Scripture and Art is a unique educational project that combines the recitation of the Hebrew Bible (together with translations in English and other languages) with visually enriching images of ancient, classic, and modern art.
By doing so, Scripture and Art wants to achieve several goals: * Introducing members of religious communities to a broad spectrum of visual art, thereby expanding their horizon in general and at the same time enriching the experience of the Scriptures by offering non-verbal commentaries on the text. * Introducing art lovers to the literary richness of the Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew Scriptures not only lie at the root of the Jewish and Christian cultures in a direct way, and indirectly of Islamic culture as well, the literature - both prose and poetry - is in danger to be forgotten among large sections of modern society. However, it deserves a prominent place among the treasures of world literature. * Raising awareness of the fact that these Scriptures are written in Hebrew and rooted in ancient Israelite and Judean history. * Raising awareness among the Jewish community of the liturgical tradition of the Western Sephardi Jews, also known as Spanish and Portuguese Jews. Their cantoral tradition, among the most beautiful and melodic, used to be dominant in large parts of the Jewish world, notably in the Americas. In more recent times, this tradition has been marginalized and is in danger of disappearing. For these reasons, Scripture and Art, records scriptural texts according to the Western Sephardi cantoral tradition. |
